14-19 Learning Pathways

From Key Stage 4 onwards our pupils are provided with new opportunities to develop their skills and aspirations for the future.  This is done through a range of formal, informal and non-formal activities.  Pupils access accredited courses in line with their academic abilities and needs.

We complete courses from Pre-Entry up to Entry 3 with WJEC Entry Pathways, Agored Cymru and OCR.  Pupils access courses in English, Maths and Science, as well as vocational subjects including car valeting, music, drama, ICT, cake making, etc.  In addition some pupils access the OCR Life and Living Skills course.  Pupils combine accreditations to complete awards, certificates or diplomas.  Each year courses may vary as the content of the curriculum is driven by the pupils' interests and aspirations as far as possible.

Young Enterprise

Our Post 16 students are provided with opportunities to develop their enterprising skills, including Cafe Oren, where pupils prepare and make food on Thursday for sale to staff.  Pupils are involved in all aspects of the enterprise, from designing food combinations, shopping, preparing food and managing finances.

Work Experience

In previous years our pupils have accessed work experience throughout the school year, and have attended work experience tailored to their aspirations and needs.  Pupils in Dosbarth Oren have worked in a range of businesses, including Elite, Aberdare Museum, St Fagan's Meals on Wheels, Aberdare Library, Ysguborwen Care Home, local Primary Schools, and within Park Lane.  Pupils enjoy their experiences and have developed excellent work ethic skills.  In 2018 we are developing work experience further, to include block sessions for work experience.
